Recycled Art

Over the summer I experimented creating with materials I found around me. I took some ideas I have done in the past and re-created pieces out of materials some may throw away. I also spent a great deal of time researching new ideas on how to turn everyday materials or garbage into art.

In this piece, I created a weaved basket out of yarn scraps and a paper cup. To create this piece I cut vertical strips in the cup, then simply weaved the yarn in and out of the strips. This form worked quite well with this idea, allowing me to bend the top pieces down a little to create a unique rim to the basket. I learned that this process wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be, yet in order for the weaving (pattern of over and under) to work you need to begin with an odd number of vertical strips. By adding different colors of yarn and raffia it gave the basket a unique look that took a little more thought and plan. Once I created this basket I feel that I could create many more expanding on different ideas. I could have added beads or feathers to the piece to make it a little more detailed. This weaved basket is an idea that I plan on using with some elementary art students because I feel that it could be something that they could easily do and yet be creative designing their own basket as unique as their own personality.
